Linen Chute - Typical Detail
Size: Linen chutes are generally supplied in circular section with internal diameters of 450mm, 500mm, 550mm, 600mm or 800mm. Where possible it is recommend the optimum size chute of 600mm – 800mm diameter is used.
Material Specification: It is recommend the linen chutes be manufactured from stainless steel with material thickness selected from either 1.2mm, 1.5mm, 2mm or 3mm. Linen chute doors should be manufactured entirely from high grade stainless steel, side hinged, self closing, provide smoke seal and be certified 2 hour fire protection rating.
Design: Generally a typical chute will comprise of two or three sections per floor connected by angle rings or a telescopic joint. An entry section holds the linen chute door and the chute is supported at each floor level using a special clamp band support frame.
Fire Sprinklers: Fire sprinklers shall be fitted inside the linen chute and shall be accessible form hopper
door. The sprinkler heads shall be fitted with protective guards to prevent damage to sprinkler head & linen. Sprinklers shall be activated on fusible bulb specified to Fire officer approval
Electric Interlocks: To increase safety levels it is recommended linen chute doors are fitted with electric interlocks. Electro-magnetic solenoid bolts lock linen chute doors closed, a push button activates door opening. Interlocks ensure only one door can be used at a time. The interlock electric circuit should also be linked to the building management system. In the unlikely event of fire on activation of building fire & smoke detectors the linen chute doors shall automatically be lock closed.
Automatic Fire Shut Off Door: The Linen chute should also be provided with an automatic fire shut off door at the bottom section of chute preferably at underside of the first floor & easily accessible for re-arming. Fire shut off doors are normally operated by spring mechanism activated on a fusible link system. In the event of a fire the fusible link breaks and the springs pull the shutter door across the chute. The fire door should have minimum 2 hour fire rating protection.
